It has been a pleasure working with some of the most gifted and talented teachers I have ever worked with in my 30-plus years of education.
The teachers who work in this district are dedicated, caring and devoted teachers anyone could hope to be associated with.
Even in a district that is in program-improvement status, (a condition in which its schools are not meeting state and/or federal minimum academic standards) these teachers work tirelessly.
Teachers working under poorest circumstances still raise test scores
They work after school, come in on the weekends, attend conferences to improve their skills and knowledge as teachers, teach to rigorous curriculum and maintain communication with parents.
The teachers are working under the poorest of circumstances and, yet, they are able to raise state test scores and somehow keep their sense of humor, put a smile on their face and walk in their classrooms eager to teach a group of young people.
Yet, our teachers don't feel respected, valued or heard by the district administration.
At the beginning of the school year, the teachers were informed that "failure is not an option."
If that's the case, why did it take the district four months this year to get textbooks into the hands of the students?
Why has the district not given all students access to computers in our schools in order to help them with their projects and other assignments?
Why has the district not provided additional portable classrooms for the purpose of starting up our English Language Development?
Why is our special education director unknowledgeable about special education laws?
Why don't students and teachers have access to existing technology already purchased by our district?
Why is it that our newest school doesn't have enough electrical outlets, room for students to sit, sufficient number of bookshelves, working library, computer lab or playground?
The list goes on and on and yet the district continues to assert that failure is not an option!
How can this be?
How can failure not be an option when the district is not providing the minimal and necessary tools to help make our students successful?
The Greenfield Teachers Association Executive Board believes our consultants care more about having standards posted and repeated several times an hour than the content of the subjects being taught and what the students retain.
Together they believe that it is more important to "get through" the information rather than making sure the students understand what they are learning.
The belief that "one size fits all" does not work for our students!
